How do I copy a DVD with XP Home on a laptop with only 1 CD drive? And do I
copy it onto a normal CD, or do I need a special DVD disc?

Obviously if your copying a DVD, you need a blank DVD to copy to. You do it
by reviewing the help section of the mastering software you have installed
on your laptop, popular ones are Nero, Roxio, etc. You cannot copy DVD's
natively in XP, you have to use 3rd party software.

If you only have one *CD* drive, you're out of luck. You need at least
one DVD drive, and that one needs to be capable of recording a DVD as
well as playing one. Assuming that you have a DVD-recorder, a blank
recordable DVD, and appropriate software, you don't need a second DVD
drive (although that would be quicker). The software should create an
intermediate file on your hard drive.

Sorry, I confused things

I have a CD/DVD drive in the laptop.

My questions are:
are CD-R sufficient to copy a DVD onto it, or are DVD disks totaly different
(other than size, obviously).
then, does XP provide software to copy a DVD onto a CD-R (Windows Media
Player?)?

JB,
for copying, reading or ANY process you want to perform on a DVD disk
you will need a DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE on your system. A CD-ROM drive will not
recognise a DVD disk. If you DO have a DVD/CD-ROM drive, then you only need
one drive for copying. As "Lem" wrote; the 3rd-party software (as Windows
will not do copying of DVDs natively) will create an 'image' file of the
drive as intermediate storage of the DVD's contents while you place a blank
DVD in the drive. NERO is a very good choice for this purpose.

If you are copying a DVD and you want it in the same format - you will need
DVD media - the size *alone* is enough to stop you from using CDs.

If you have just a plain CD/DVD drive (not a DVD writer) - then you will not
be writing to DVDs anyway.

You can change the format/convert (maybe) the DVD contents to VCD and burn
to a CD and even have that playable in some stand-alone commercial DVD
players using special software.

As for Windows XP providing software to do this - no.

DVD and CD drive "may" look the same and use the same size 'disks' but
CD drive can not read DVDs.

You need a real DVD drive and it needs to be a DVD RW drive.

If you want to copy a DVD, you need to copy it to a blank DVD--one of
the right kind for your DVD drive.

But if your drive is a CD drive, not a DVD drive, you can't copy it at
all.

And you need third-party DVD-burning software. Windows XP can not do
this natively.

The fact that you have only a single drive is irrelevant. If you have
the right kind of drive and the right kind of software, it will read
the original DVD, then prompt you to change to a blank DVD so it can
burn to it.
