Recently I had to take my Phillips flat screen monitor in to be replaced, in the meantime I used my Flat Screen TV as a monitor, I had problems with it reverting to 1280 x 1024 so I had to keep changing the resolution.
When I got the new monitor and went to set the resolution it again kept reverting to 1280 x 1024 and I could not change the resolution using display properties, I had to change them using ATI Catalyst, they kept reverting after restarts or after playing games.
So, I did a complete uninstall of the video drivers and the monitor drivers including cleaning the registry of anything ATI. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for both but before doing so, noticed that display settings could not be changed in display properties even though I had a choice of resolutions and colour options, it kept defaulting to 800 x 600.
After reinstalling the drivers the settings now defaults to 640 X 480 with 8 bit colour so it is now worse than before. I can change the setting in ATI Catalyst but not in Display Properties, if I try it reverts. The settings still do not hold, they revert after restarting or playing games.
I have Windows XP service pack 3, and ATI Radeon 9600 series AGP video card, and a Phillips 90CW widescreen monitor.
System restore did not work, I have tried everything I can think of.
Is there a way to force the resolution to 1400 x 900 with 32 bit high colour?

Hi Wickitoria
I had a similar problem a while back, hibernate or sleep and everything was OK, restart and the display resolution would reset to 600 x 800,
tried everything I could think of as you seem to have already done, then I picked up a nasty virus, and had to re-install, which solved my problem??
Now when I re-installed I scrapped AVG8, and so I don't know if that was causing the problem?
But between formatting, installing and not using AVG8 my Display resolution now stays at 1024 X 768, If anyone else has an answer, I would really like to hear, as I had to consign my problem to 'One of them things'. and never did get to the bottom of it.

As its an AGP card - I would make sure that its set to the full speed in the BIOS - check its not trying to run in 2x or 4x more (I am guessing that its an 8x AGP card)
AND make sure that you have the AGP driver installed off the MOBO disk
AND make sure that you have the AGP driver installed off the MOBO disk

I have come across this problem on the net before. I don't use AVG and yes it is set to x8 and the people with this problem had no joy with the original drivers either. I suspect it is windows display properties playing up as it doesnt work even with video card drivers uninstalled, will reinstalling the rundll.32 fix it????

do you have onboard graphics available ?
I would not think that it is windows as the default drivers can easily run an AGP card as I have one at home that runs fine.
Something in your BIOS or OS has been changed that is affecting the cards performance

Yes I do have the option for onboard graphics, am going to try that next.
I have checked the Bios.
The computer runs fine using the default AGP drivers except it still defaults to the lowest settings available.
The problem began when I hooked up an older monitor and was switching from that to the TV.
I guess I will have to revert to my last resort....reinstall windows, not looking forward to that.

that's the easy bit, its installing all the software and up dating I hate, then getting all the settings to how I like them, normally in time for me to mess things up again messing with things I shouldn't.
But hey that's why I have a computer, not so it works properly, more for the constant fix-ability factor
