OK it is nice to be able to create a forum when you have an issue.

I have been using Firefox as my default browser for some time now and generally prefer it to IE. (It seems that IE8 snuck in during a critical update.)

My issue is that when I open FF for the first time after any boot or restart it takes almost a full minute or more to load. IE loads much faster to the same home page. However, once it loads for the first time it will reload very fast even if it has been closed. Navigation presents no problem at all.

I have waited to make sure that I am not just jumping the gun while other starup applications may be loading but that is not the case.

Am I alone in this or has anyone had any similar experiences.

Can't say that I suffer with that problem, the only time I get a noticable delay it is normally followed by a pop up box telling me there is an update available for an add on.

And yes IE8 is in a critical update, just opened it to see if there was any difference, other than an annoying box saying welcome to IE8, I would say that Firefox opens faster.

Yep and have tried firetune and any tweaks I can think of. Just can't figure it but fortunately it is a petty annoyance. It is fine once it loads for the first time.

It is not getting caught up with the rest of your PC loading is it? or does this still happen if you don't open it right away?

That is the thing. It happens when I try to load FF for the first time regardless of when I start the machine.

First of all, try to open FireFox in the SafeMode, this is done by going to Start, then All Programs then open Mozilla FireFox and then finally opening Mozilla FireFox (Safe Mode). This should prove to be a quicker startup as it loads Firefox without all of the addons and extras that the normal one would have.

If this does indeed start up faster then it is something that you have loaded extra on your normal verison, i.e addons themes or extensions.

If it does not help,
Try this little tip that I have sought out to help you, oh Master;

Check that you don't have too many addons or extensions, and that they are all the newest versions.

Or you can download a little program called FireFox Preloader, this basically does what IE does and loads part of Firefox on it's own so it doesn't have to load as much when you wish to open the program.

Another way is to do the following:

Change your firefox shortcut to the following; by right clicking on the icon, selecting properties and then adding "/prefetch:1" to the end of the current target.
firefox.exe /prefetch:1
This should make every firefox startup time faster.

I'll give your suggestions a try on my next reboot Matt. I doubt it is either add-ons or extensions however. I have noticed that the latest Java update has included something called Java Quick Starter.

From my research it is difficult to remove. That being said, while there is information on its removal available, there is little that says what, if any, problems it may create.

That being said, I will try the safe mode method and see if there is a difference.

Evidently not needed with Vista, and can be disabled.

What is Java Quick Starter (JQS)? What is the benefit of running JQS?

I am actually running 3.5 since this morning :o. For some reason I was not notified of the upgrade. I also have not rebooted since.

Dougie, thanks for that but I have yet to determine whether the Java quick loader is an issue.

I have rebooted and have achieved a noticeable difference. Where it took me about a minute for FF to load with the old version, it now takes about 90 seconds with the new.

Interestingly there is no indication that I have even clicked on the thing until it starts to be visible. No hour glass etc. Then when it decides it is time to rear its head it takes about another 20 seconds to fully load.

Still once it does, it is through annoying me for the day and loads in seconds. I tried to explain to it that this is embarrassing but it refuses to listen. I have decided to ignore it and make coffee while it loads.

A minute and a half? Mine fully loads in 15 seconds. There's definitely something wrong still.

Don't feel bad. I talk to my computer constantly. :D

I know that with enough trial and error I will be able to get to it. Process of elimination and all that. The thing is I am bored with the subject and have stopped caring.

Barry it is probably not your computer. It is FireFox itself. I just read this...

It looks like Mozilla has set July 7 as a community "bug day" to address the problems in Firefox 3.5. There have been more than 55 known issues / bugs found in the last two days so it looks like the Firefox team has its work cut out for it.

Mozilla is scrambling to fix bugs in its just-released Firefox 3.5 browser. Users are posting complaints about problems across the Web. Those problems include longer load times and crashes linked to the TraceMonkey Javascript engine. The browser also reportedly has problems with Windows XP.
