I'm not sure what I like better, the user name or the avatar
! But that begs the question. I have recently started using eset NOD32. It is unobtrusive and widely acclaimed. I deliberately have not supplied a link because there may be some trustworthy deals around. Normally it costs $39.99.
The free ones that most people prefer are AVAST or AVIRA. AVG is not a fan favorite around here.

I have 4 systems ranging from Win 2000 to Vista.
These are my choice of AV program.
Avast on XP m/cs
Avira on Win 2000 and Vista.
I've tried Norton, McAfee etc in the past and my personal view is that you don't really get much more for your money by paying for an AV program.
At the end of the day... it's what works for you.

Is there a reason why one is better for one Windows version - and another program for the other, I wonder, starbuck?

No, there's not a reason.
In my opinion both these programs are as good as each other.
There's not many Firewalls that work well with Win2000, but the Avira one does.... so i use their 'Premium Suite' that offers AV and Firewall.
I also wanted to try the 'Online Armor' firewall .... so as i used Avast on the XP m/c's, this seemed a good partnership.
I then used the Avira 'Premium Suite' on the Vista m/c .... because at the time Online Armor didn't work with Vista.
I know the Avira Suite is technically a paid for program but the AV side of it is the same as the free version.
Plus... i got the licenses given to me, (i'm good at begging) but don't tell everyone.

I don't think there ever going to be one anti-virus program that will stand out better than the others . I think what you should go by is what works best on your computer and which one your find you perfer . If I had to choose which one I like ? I would go with Avast free .

As people have said its all down to preference, but you need more than just AV these days a decent suite includes AV, firewall and malware protection.
In terms of suites I dont think that anyone will argue that NOD32 is the most renouned in the computer place and used by professionals, BUT you need to ask yourself what you will be happy with, will windows FW cut it for you with a free AV? its personal choice but I use windows FW with windows live onecare (which people in the PC community do not rate at all) but in the past 3 years of using it not had one piece of Malware or Virus and I know for a fact that people using NOD32 or FREE software cannot say the same................
Dont buy/use Norton or AVG though or you will be asking for trouble

I am not a myth.
I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge -- myth is more potent than history -- dreams are more powerful than facts -- hope always triumphs over experience -- laughter is the cure for grief -- love is stronger than death.
